A designer retreat in Mallorca

I’ve a soft spot for Danish designer Malene Birger’s fashion label that delivers modern casual luxury with an artistic twist to contemporary classics and a love for traditional craftsmanship. The same values correspond to her interior décor line, recently launched as a free standing brand under the name of Birger1962.

Her house in Palma de Mallorca which has been her creative retreat for some years displays Malene’s interior design talents that surpasses even her beautiful home in Copenhagen featured in décor magazines and designer’s own photo book: Life and Work: Malene Birger's Life in Pictures.

The Palma home, situated in an historical building in the centre of the city, reflects Mallorca’s city mood, with a busy energy outside and very peaceful inside. Malene Birger designed her home in the same way as her fashion collections: balancing functionality and beauty with a keen eye for detail, inspired by art, culture, travels and hotel lifestyle.

Using symmetry and minimal, muted colors she puts in value the eclectic mix of art, design and handicraft: the rooms gather African masks and statuettes, Indian pillows, Moroccan rugs, rustic cabinets and tables, iconic modern classic pieces such as Arne Jacobsen Swan chairs in the living room and Eames chairs in the kitchen, antique mirrors, lamps and a chandelier that hangs from a beautiful tile ceiling. The bohemian chic décor is completed with carved dark wood doors and windows and a suite of framed pictures and paintings, including Malene Birger’s own artworks.
